Ongoing Projects

1. Greenhouse Project targeting schools and women

This Project aims at improving food security and nutrition in schools and among women. Even though there is no definite funding for the Project, I have been able to approach well-wishers and government agencies including Kerio Valley Development Authority (KVDA), which is in the process of setting up demonstration greenhouses in Turkana to help communities learn and benefit.

So far Napuu Primary school has a big green house which supplements the school feeding programme for over 1500 children in the school and another 3000 children in the neighboring schools.

Lotubwae community in Turkana East has benefited from one more greenhouse of the same capacity.

2. Table Banking In Turkana County
What is table banking? It is a group funding scheme where members of given groups meet once a month, place their savings, loan repayments and other contributions on the table then borrow immediately either as long term or short term loans. The women often utilize the funds borrowed as capital for their livelihoods.
The office of the Turkana County MP has partnered with the Joyful Women Organization (JoyWo) to economically empower women in Turkana through the table banking initiative. The enterprise was launched in Lodwar town on 12 April 2014 by Her Excellency Rachel Ruto, the national patron of JoyWo. This was followed by recruitment and training of a Coordinator and 13 Programme Officers who immediately embarked on mobilizing and training women.
JoyWo, through its staff, has not only provided women with entrepreneurship skills but enabled women to access such basic services as NHIF and NSSF.
As at February 2015, we have 146 women groups a membership of 2,383 women and savings of 6,224,204.00 million Kenya shillings. JoyWo has an office in Lodwar town situated at Nawoitorong, Norad, behind Nakuluja Academy. The programme Officers supports women groups at the sub-county, ward and village levels.
So far women have borrowed money and engaged in the following livelihood projects which are successful: (we are yet to start on projects & marking) the proposed projects are:
1.     Poultry
2      Basketry /Mat Making Market Linkages
3.     Livestock production-value addition
4     Marketing of Farming products like Maize, sorgum and Fruits
