Kiambu County Agenda

Challenges to be addressed:

1. Poverty – According to a survey conducted in 2005 by the Kenya bureau of Statistics, poverty in Kiambu stood at 25.4%. A recent survey by the Kiambu County Red Cross chapter however reports that 53% of the county population lives below the poverty line.

2. Farming is on the decline. This is because of rising costs of inputs and not everyone has land to farm. The total land surface area is 2,523SQKM with a density of 638 people per SQKM. This is further escalated by a rising demand for land by real estate developers because of Kiambu County’s proximity to Kenya’s capital city – Nairobi.

3. Youth and Family – there is a noticeable trend in irresponsible parenthood, drunkenness, drug abuse which translates to erosion in family values and disorientation to the youth

4. Education – The County has an urban population 60.8%. The rural folk has poor intake for education
